Swift explicó el significado de la canción en su sitio web: "'Haunted' es acerca del momento en que te das cuenta de que la persona de la que estás enamorada se está alejando y desapareciendo rápidamente. Y no sabes qué hacer, pero en ese período de tiempo, en esa fase del amor, donde se está desvaneciendo, el tiempo se mueve muy lentamente. Todo depende de lo que dijo el último mensaje de texto, y te das cuenta de que se está quedando sin amor. Eso es algo realmente desgarrador y trágico, porque todo el tiempo que intentas decirte a ti mismo no está sucediendo. Pasé por esto y terminé despertándome en mitad de la noche escribiendo esta canción sobre eso." Ella también explicó la razón de usar una sección de cuerdas en la canción: "Quería que la música y la orquestación reflejaran la intensidad de la emoción de la canción, así que grabamos cuerdas con Paul Buckmaster en Capitol Studios en Los Ángeles.
