1989 (Taylor's Version) is the re-recording of Taylor Swift's first studio album 1989. It is her fourth re-recorded album. It was released on October 27, 2023, through Republic Records. The re-record's release was on hold due to the "Shake It Off" lawsuit, which has since been dropped without a final verdict on December 12, 2022. The album's confirmation and release date were announced on August 9, 2023, the last date of the first leg of the United States for The Eras Tour. The album features five "From The Vault" tracks. A Target-exclusive vinyl also contains an additional bonus track, "Sweeter Than Fiction (Taylor's Version)". There are 4 deluxe CD editions of the album available with exclusive pictures from the 1989 album photoshoot. At Target, these CD variants are instead sold with posters containing the original handwritten lyrics to some of the original 1989 songs.

As per her contract with Big Machine Records, Swift released six studio albums under the label from 2006 to 2017. In late 2018, the contract with the label expired; she hence withdrew from Big Machine and signed a new recording deal with Republic Records, a division of Universal Music Group, which secured her the rights to own the masters of the new music she will release. In 2019, American businessman Scooter Braun and his company Ithaca Holdings acquired Big Machine. As part of the acquisition, ownership of the masters to Swift's first six studio albums, including 1989, transferred to Braun. In August 2019, Swift denounced Braun's purchase of the label and announced that she would re-record her first six studio albums, to own their masters herself. In November 2020, Braun sold the masters to Shamrock Holdings, an American private equity firm owned by the Disney estate, under the conditions that Braun and Ithaca Holdings will continue to financially profit from the albums. Swift began re-recording the albums in November 2020.

In March 2021, a trailer for the film Spirit Untamed came out.[1] "Wildest Dreams (Taylor's Version)" was used as the music in the trailer. On September 17, 2021, "Wildest Dreams (Taylor's Version)" became the first promotional single from the album, confirming that Swift had been in the process of re-recording 1989.[2]

The second promotional single, "This Love (Taylor's Version)", was released on May 6, 2022, and featured in the Amazon Prime original series The Summer I Turned Pretty. A merchandise collection was released on May 5, 2022, along with the announcement of "This Love (Taylor's Version)".[3]

The re-recording of "Bad Blood", was featured in the movie DC League of Super-Pets, which released in July 2022, though Swift didn't release the song on streaming when the film premiered.

The re-recording of "Out of the Woods" was featured in the trailer for the movie Migration.

It is believed that the long awaiting for the album's release was caused by Swift being sued since 2017 by songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler, who claimed she took lyrics from their 2001 song "Playas Gon' Play" by 3LW. The basis of their suit is that "Playas Gon' Play," like "Shake It Off" includes versions of the phrases "haters gonna hate" and "players gonna play."

Later, in her newly filed declaration, Swift stated she never heard "Playas Gon' Play" before the suit was filed and that the similarities between her song and "Playas Gon Play" only exist because phrases like "haters gonna hate" are ubiquitous across culture.[4] It was later announced that the trial's date was moved to January 17, 2023. However, on December 12, 2022, it was announced that both sides agreed to drop the lawsuit, without a verdict.

A small hint about the re-recording appeared on the music video of "Bejeweled", where Taylor goes from the third floor (colored purple) to the fifth floor (colored light blue). This was implying that the album could come after the re-record of Speak Now.

Another hint that this album would be the next re-record came in the official music video for "I Can See You", which ends with the main characters crossing a bridge with a sign reading "1'-9' 8.9tv."

On August 9, at her final show at The Eras Tour for the first North American leg, Taylor announced during the acoustic set that the album would be released on October 27, 2023. August 9, 2023 was exactly 8 years, 9 months, and 13 days after the original release of 1989, and the date written in numerical format is 8/9, both referencing the album's title.

From The Vault[]

The first vault video for 1989 (Taylor's Version) was released on September 19, 2023. It featured two quotation marks, and the letters L, U, S, T, and an exclamation mark, leading fans to believe that the track would be titled "Lust!" or "Slut!". After this, a Google search puzzle game was released, where starting on the search "Taylor Swift", fans could search for 89 puzzles to work towards a global total of 33 million puzzles solved to unlock the full vault. Swifties were able to solve the vault within only a day. The vault tracks were later confirmed by the vault opening and Swift's Instagram post.

On September 20, 2023, Taylor Nation announced four of the five "From The Vault" track titles, and these were:

Though the fifth one was posted in her socials, the last one was confirmed as "Slut!".
