"Bye Bye Baby" (originally titled "The One Thing") is the twenty-sixth track from American singer and songwriter Taylor Swift's debut re-recorded album, Fearless (Taylor's Version), released on April 9, 2021, through Republic Records.
Background and release[]
As part of her unprecedented battle to regain ownership of her own music, Swift re-visited her second studio album, Fearless with the release of Fearless (Taylor’s Version), over a decade after the original’s release. Alongside re-working the album, Swift added six previously unreleased songs to the project, one of them being “Bye Bye Baby”.
A picture of Swift’s early concept tracklist for Fearless shows that the original title for this song was “The One Thing”. It was likely taken off the album because of it’s similarities to Michelle Branch’s “Goodbye To You”. That’s probably why some changes were made between the leaked demo version and the one that was finally released in 2021. Taylor subsequently tweaked multiple lyrics, including substituting:
‘Cause you took me home
But you just couldn’t keep me
For: From the one thing I thought would never leave me
Lyrical Theme[]
Swift wrote the song with Liz Rose, one of her principal collaborators on her first three albums. She co-produced the track with another of her frequent collaborators, Jack Antonoff. Lyrically, “Bye Bye Baby” finds Swift driving away after splitting from her boyfriend. It seems it was him who instigated the breakup as she still loves him, but all she has now is his sympathy. She is in a state of disbelief because a relationship she was so sure of has unexpectedly ended.
Chart Performance[]
“Bye Bye Baby” debuted at No. 49 on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart on the week ending April 15, 2021.
Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
It wasn't just like a movie
The rain didn't soak through my clothes, down to my skin
I'm driving away and I, I guess you could say
This is the last time I'll drive this way again
Lost in the gray and I try to grab at the fray
'Cause I, I still love you, but I can't
[Chorus]
Bye, bye, to everything I thought was on my side
Bye, bye, baby
I want you bad but it's come down to nothing
And all I have is your sympathy
'Cause you took me home but you just couldn't keep me
Bye, bye, baby
Bye, bye, baby
[Verse 2]
The picture frame is empty
On the dresser, vacant, just like me
I see your writing on the dash
Then, back to your hesitation
I was so sure of everything
Everything I thought we'd always have
Guess I never doubted it
Then, the here and the now floods in
Feels like I'm becoming a part of your past
[Chorus]
Bye, bye, to everything I thought was on my side
Bye, bye, baby
I want you bad but it's come down to nothing
And all I have is your sympathy
'Cause you took me home but you just couldn't keep me
Bye, bye, baby
[Verse 3]
And there's so much that I can't touch
You're all I want but it's not enough this time
And all the pages are just slipping through my hands
And I'm so scared of how this ends
[Chorus]
Bye, bye, to everything I thought was on my side
Bye, bye, baby
I want you bad but it's come down to nothing
And all I have is your sympathy
'Cause you took me home but you just couldn't keep me
[Chorus]
Bye, bye, to everything I thought was on my side
Bye, bye, baby
I want you bad but it's come down to nothing
And all I have is your sympathy
'Cause you took me home but you just couldn't keep me
Oh, you took me home, I thought you were gonna keep me
Bye, bye, baby
Bye, bye, baby
[Verse 1]
It wasn't just like a movie
The rain didn't soak through my clothes, down to my skin
I'm driving away and I, I guess you could say
This is the last time I'll drive this way again
When there's nothing to say and I try to grab at the fray
'Cause I, I still love you, but I can't
[Chorus]
Bye, bye, to everything I thought was on my side
Bye, bye, baby
I want you bad but it's coming down to nothing
And all you have is to walk away
From the one thing I thought would never leave me, yeah
[Verse 2]
The picture frame is empty
It's black and white, you're smiling down at me
I take your photo off the dash
And back to the conversation
I was so sure of everything we thought we'd always have
I'm lost in the sound of it
But here in the now comes in
Seems like I'm becoming part of your past
[Chorus]
Bye, bye, to everything I thought was on my side
Bye, bye, baby
I want you bad but it's coming down to nothing
And all you have is to walk away
From the one thing I thought would never leave me
[Verse 3]
And there's so much that I can't touch
You're all I want but it's not enough this time
And I can feel you, like you're slipping through my hands
And I'm so scared of how this ends
[Chorus]
Bye, bye, to everything I thought was on my side
Bye, bye, baby
I want you bad but it's coming down to nothing
And all you have is to walk away
From the one thing I thought would never leave me
[Chorus]
Bye, bye, to everything I thought was on my side
Bye, bye, baby
I want you bad but it's coming down to nothing
And all you have is to walk away
From the one thing I thought would never leave me, yeah, yeah
There was one thing I knew would never leave me
[Outro]
It wasn't just like a movie
The rain didn't soak through my clothes, down to my skin
