"Dark Blue Tennessee" is an unreleased song by American singer and songwriter Taylor Swift. The song is an outtake from her debut album, Taylor Swift, and her second studio album, Fearless.[1]
Background[]
The song tells the story of two lovers who have recently broken up, and while one of them claims to have moved to LA, he is actually still in Tennessee, where his ex-partner lives. They both want the other to come visit them in Tennessee, and one night, she almost calls him, but doesn't. That same night, he commits suicide, and leaves her with nothing but a goodbye note.
There are three known versions of the song. The first two demos were leaked and intended for her debut album, Taylor Swift, while the third version is intended for Fearless and remains unleaked.
It's possible that the reason it was cut was its dark subject matter.
Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
He said, "I got me a nice new apartment"
"In a city, wouldn't you have hated that?"
"I'm getting by with a broken heart you left me with"
He hangs up the phone and she whispers back
[Chorus]
Missing you like this is such sweet sorrow
Won't you come back to me?
I'll be here, today and here tomorrow
In dark blue Tennessee
[Verse 2]
He was lying when he said he moved to L.A.
He's just hiding out on the other side of town
With his head in his hands and she's just seven miles away
He's staring out the window and puts her picture down, saying
[Chorus]
Missing you like this is such sweet sorrow
Won't you come back to me?
I'll be here, today and here tomorrow
In dark blue Tennessee
[Bridge]
She almost called him on the night that he wrote
These simple words on his goodbye note
[Chorus]
Missing you like this is such sweet sorrow
Won't you come back to me?
I'll be here, today and here tomorrow
In dark blue Tennessee
