Dear John” is a 2010 song by Taylor Swift. It is the fifth track from her third studio album, Speak Now.

The song is written about John Mayer, one of her ex-boyfriends that she had briefly dated. She also worked with him on a song called "Half of My Heart" for his 2009 album, Battle Studies.

Mayer, who is well-known for publicly talking about his relationships with various famous women in the press, has whined in an interview in Rolling Stones about Taylor writing the song about him. He said about Taylor humiliating him with the song. [1]

The song "Dear John" is sort of like the last email you would ever send to someone that you used to be in a relationship with. Usually people write this venting last email to someone and they say everything that they want to say to that person, and then they usually don't send it. I guess by putting this song on the album I am pushing send.

“Dear John” is an ode to Taylor’s short-lived relationship with fellow singer-songwriter John Mayer. Taylor conveys her feelings of frustration over the fact that she was warned about John’s manipulative ways yet still pursued him.

Throughout the song, there are multiple references to Mayer directly, including the mention of their almost ten-year age gap and even his name. Musically, Taylor added the slurs of the guitar, which is a common instrument in Mayer’s inventory.

It’s also a lyric from Taylor Swift’s “Superman”, which is also rumored to be about Mayer.

Lyrics

Long were the nights when my days once revolved around you
Counting my footsteps praying the floor won't fall through again
And my mother accused me of losing my mind
But I swore I was fine

You paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain
And I lived in your chess game
But you changed the rules everyday
Wondering which version of you I might get on the phone
Tonight
Well I stopped picking up and this song is to let you know why

Dear John, I see it all now that you're gone
Don't you think I was too young to be messed with
The girl in the dress cried the whole way home
I should've known

Well maybe it's me and my blind optimism to blame
Or maybe it's you and your sick need to give love then take it away
And you'll add my name to your long list of traitors who don't understand
And I'll look back and regret how I ignored when they said
Run as fast as you can

Dear John, I see it all now that you're gone
Don't you think I was too young to be messed with
The girl in the dress cried the whole way home
Dear John, I see it all now it was wrong
Don't you think 19's too young to be played by
Your dark twisted games when I loved you so
I should've known

You are an expert at sorry
And keeping lines blurry
Never impressed by me acing your tests
All the girls that you've run dry
Have tired, lifeless eyes
Cause you burned them out
But I took your matches before fire could catch me
So don't look now
I'm shining like fireworks
Over your sad empty town

Dear John, I see it all now that you're gone
Don't you think I was too young to be messed with
The girl in the dress cried the whole way home
I see it all now that you're gone
Don't you think I was too young to be messed with
The girl in the dress wrote you a song
You should've known
You should've known
Don't you think I was too young
You should've known
