"Everything Has Changed" is the fourteenth track from American singer and songwriter Taylor Swift's fourth studio album, Red, released on October 22, 2012, through Big Machine Records. The song became the sixth single from the album on July 16, 2013. It is also the fourteenth track from her second re-recorded album, Red (Taylor's Version), released on November 12, 2021, through Republic Records.
Background[]
Sheeran stated in an interview with MTV that he and Swift disagreed about one of the chords, and she just pointed to all of the Grammys and Billboard Awards and Songwriting Guild she had on her wall.[1]
While the hidden message in the liner notes of the song reads, Hyannis Port, implying the song is about Conor Kennedy, who lived near Hyannis Port and had a brief relationship with Swift during the summer of 2012. However, this is impossible, as the final draft of Everything Has Changed was written May 28th, 2012, and the couple dated in the summer.[2]
It is unknown who the song is truly about, as the original lyrics mention the muse having green eyes and being a Gemini, a description that fits none of Swift's known partners or dates from the time.[3] It is possible that the addition was from Sheeran, or that the song is based on a fictional scenario.
Composition[]
The song is written in the key of F-sharp major with 80 beats per minute, and lasts four minutes and four seconds. Swift's vocals span from F#3 to C#5.
Music video[]
A video for the song premiered on June 6, 2013, on Vevo. It shows two children bearing resemblance to Swift and Sheeran at school. The two children participate in various school activities and playtime activities, some with one another. A moment in the video features the children texting on fake phones, with the conversation emulating one that Swift had posted on Twitter that took place between her and Sheeran. The video ends with the kids leaving school for the day. The children run to their respective guardians, played by Swift and Sheeran. It is unclear whether Swift and Sheeran are playing siblings, parents, or other relatives. The music video for Sheeran's song "The Joker And The Queen" is a continuation of this video, taking place a few years later, with the same actors.
Hidden message[]
Hidden message: Hyannis Port.
Lyrics[]
[Intro: Ed Sheeran]
(You good to go?)
[Verse 1: Taylor Swift]
All I knew, this morning when I woke
Is I know something now
Know something now I didn't before
And all I've seen since eighteen hours ago
Is green eyes and freckles and your smile
In the back of my mind, making me feel like
[Pre-Chorus: Ed Sheeran & Taylor Swift]
I just wanna know you better
Know you better, know you better now
I just wanna know you better
Know you better, know you better now
I just wanna know you better
Know you better, know you better now
I just wanna know you, know you, know you
[Chorus: Ed Sheeran & Taylor Swift]
'Cause all I know is we said, "Hello"
And your eyes look like coming home
All I know is a simple name
And everything has changed
All I know is you held the door
You'll be mine and I’ll be yours
All I know since yesterday
Is everything has changed
[Verse 2: Ed Sheeran & Taylor Swift]
And all my walls stood tall, painted blue
I'll take ‘em down, take ‘em down
And open up the door for you
And all I feel in my stomach is butterflies
The beautiful kind, making up for lost time
Taking flight, making me feel right
[Pre-Chorus: Ed Sheeran & Taylor Swift]
I just wanna know you better
Know you better, know you better now
I just wanna know you better
Know you better, know you better now
I just wanna know you better
Know you better, know you better now
I just wanna know you, know you, know you
[Chorus: Ed Sheeran & Taylor Swift]
'Cause all I know is we said, "Hello"
And your eyes look like coming home
All I know is a simple name
And everything has changed
All I know is you held the door
You'll be mine and I’ll be yours
All I know since yesterday
Is everything has changed
[Bridge: Ed Sheeran & Taylor Swift]
Come back and tell me why
I'm feeling like I’ve missed you all this time
And meet me there tonight
Let me know that it's not all in my mind
[Pre-Chorus: Taylor Swift]
I just wanna know you better
Know you better, know you better now
I just wanna know you, know you, know you
[Chorus: Ed Sheeran & Taylor Swift]
'Cause all I know is we said, "Hello"
And your eyes look like coming home
All I know is a simple name
And everything has changed
All I know is you held the door
You'll be mine and I’ll be yours
All I know since yesterday
Is everything has changed
[Outro: Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran & Taylor Swift]
All I know is we said, "Hello"
So dust off your highest hopes
All I know is pouring rain
And everything has changed
All I know is a new found grace
All my days I’ll know your face
All I know since yesterday
Is everything has changed

The song has received critical acclaim from music critics upon release. Billboard gave the song a very positive review, saying "'I just wanna know you better / know you better now,' Swift and Sheeran serenade each other on this sweet duet about the sudden impact of new romance. The drums come in. "All I know is you held the door / You'll be mine and I'll be yours." Turns out it's a love song.
