On November 2, 2017, Lara Spencer from Good Morning America revealed that an exclusive performance of a song from Swift that hadn't been heard before would air. On November 9, a day prior to the album's release, the video debuted on ABC Television Network. Swift performed the acoustic version of the song during reputation's Rhode Island secret session.

Swift performed "New Year's Day" on November 13, 2017, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, in honor of Fallon's mother, who had passed away.[1] The song was also performed from May 8, 2018, in Glendale, Arizona, to November 21, 2018, in Tokyo, Japan, on The Reputation Stadium Tour, as the sixteenth song on the setlist, mashed-up with "Long Live".[2] It was also performed as a surprise song at the Eras Tour in Los Angeles, California, on August 9, 2023. It was performed as a surprise song a second time in Sydney, Australia, on February 24, 2024, as a mashup with "peace".
