"The Archer" is the fifth track from Taylor Swift's seventh studio album, Lover. This song is not a single, as confirmed by Taylor during her Instagram livestream, but rather a promotional single.

Taylor’s second Lover based livestream based around track five information occured on July 23 at 5 PM EST. During the livestream she explained that the deluxe editions of the albums featured pages from her own diaries along with blank pages for the buyer to write in. The livestream’s promo featured the Easter egg from the “You Need to Calm Down” music video, where Hayley Kiyoko shot an arrow at a target with a five in the middle. Taylor told Hayley to be a part of an Easter egg during filming.

Before the livestream, many curious fans visited the Lover page on iTunes and quickly noticed that the name for track five was filled in as “The Archer”. Other fans also went deeper and found that the song was written by both Taylor and Jack Antonoff. The song has a runtime of 3:31.[1][2][3]

During the livestream, Taylor was wearing an bow and arrow necklace and t-shirt, hinting at new merchandise.

The song's bridge samples the nursery rhyme "Humpty Dumpty".

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Combat
I’m ready for combat
I say I don’t want that
But what if I do?

‘Cause cruelty wins in the movies
I’ve got a hundred thrown out speeches I almost said to you

[Pre-chorus 1]
Easy they come, easy they go
I jump from the train
I ride off alone
I never grew up, it’s getting so old
Help me hold on to you

[Chorus]
I’ve been the archer.
I’ve been the prey
Who could ever leave me darling?
But who could stay?

[Verse 2]
Dark side
I search for your dark side.
But what if I’m all right, right, right, right here?
And I cut off my nose
Just to spite my face
Then I hate my reflection for years and years

[Pre-chorus 2]
I wake in the night
I pace like a ghost
The room is on fire
Invisible smoke
And all of my heroes die all alone
Help me hold onto you

[Chorus]
I’ve been the archer.
I’ve been the prey
Screaming who could ever leave me darling?
But who could stay?

[Bridge]
‘Cause they see right through me
They see right through me
They see right through me
Can you see right through me?
They see right through
They see right through me
I see right through me
I see right through me

[Pre-chorus 3]
All the king’s horses
All the king’s men
Couldn’t put me together again
‘Cause all of my enemies
Started out friends
Help me hold onto you

[Chorus]
I’ve been the archer
I’ve been the prey
Who could ever leave me darling?
But who could stay?

[Outro]
Who could stay?
Who could stay?
Who could stay?
You could stay
You could stay

Combat
I’m ready for combat
