In an interview with Vulture, Aaron Dessner said that he sent Swift a folder of song ideas and instrumentals. "cardigan" was made using an instrumental in the folder called "Maple", and in the interview Dessner said "the 1" and "hoax"... were the last songs we did. We thought it was complete, but Taylor then went back into the folder of ideas that I had shared... She wrote "the 1", then she wrote "hoax" a couple of hours later". This implies that by the end of the album there were still things from that folder left over.[1]
