You’ve probably heard of the girl who had ‘teardrops on her guitar.’ Maybe even listened to a few of her songs. Maybe a lot of her songs. Or maybe, you are a full time Swiftie. Even if you are one of those people or in between, you can count on her music to send you to outer space. But how did she get from a 16 year old girl in Nashville to the billionaire and icon she is today? This chapter will tell you all about it.

Taylor Alison Swift was born on December 13, 1989, in West Reading, Pennsylvania and raised on a christmas tree farm in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. Her mom is Andrea Swift, a homemaker who previously worked in finance. Her dad is Scott Kingsley Swift, a stockbroker. She also has a younger brother, Austin Swift.

When Taylor was in fourth grade, she won a poetry contest for her poem titled “A Monster In My Closet!” When she was ten, a computer repairman taught her to play three chords on a guitar, sparking her interest in the instrument. Taylor then went to write her first song of many, titled “Lucky You”. At the age of 12, she spent an entire summer writing a 350-page novel, which is still not published to this day.

In Tennessee, Taylor attended Hendersonville High School, but was mostly homeschooled in her junior and senior years. In 2008, she earned her high school diploma.

Taylor considers her biggest musical influence to be Shania Twain. She also was influenced by LeAnn Rimes, Tina Turner, Dolly Parton, and her grandmother, Marjorie Finlay, who was an opera singer. She has always loved country music, like Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton. She does credit the Dixie Chicks for demonstrating “stretching boundaries.”

At age 12, she made her first ever trip to Nashville, in hopes to be signed by a record label. She turned in demo cds of her singing karaoke, only to be rejected time and time again. Taylor returned to Pennsylvania, and was asked to sing at the U.S. National Tennis Tournament, where her singing of the national anthem drew attention.

At age 15,  she performed at The Bluebird Cafe, where she drew attention from Scott Borchetta. He signed her to his newly formed record label, Big Machine Records. She became the youngest staff songwriter ever hired by the Sony/ATV Tree publishing house.

Taylor released her first single, “Tim McGraw” in mid-2006. It peaked at number 6 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. Her self-titled debut albumwas released later on October 24, 2006. Debuting high on the Billboard 200, it sold 39,000 copies in the first week. It peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart.
