"Writing Songs About You" (alternatively known as "Songs About You") is an unreleased song by American singer and songwriter Taylor Swift.[1][2][3] She co-wrote it with Sarah Buxton and Victoria Shaw.
Background[]
The song was likely written around the time of her self-titled debut album’s release in 2006, Taylor Swift. The song was recorded in a studio with full instrumentals and vocals, however it simply did not make the cut for the album.[4]
Swift wrote "Writing Songs About You" with Sarah Buxton and Victoria Shaw when she was only 14 years old. Back in the day, it was streaming off Sarah’s MySpace channel where you could buy it. "Writing Songs About You" is about writing songs about a guy as a way to get over him (although she wasn't dating yet at the time).[5] It is available in PQ but that version is rare and there are a lot of fakes.
Furthermore, it was the first song she ever performed at the Bluebird Cafe during an open mic night, before she played the show that got her discovered.[6]
Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
I can't believe you did it again
Walked by and took my heart with you
Why did you have to look so good?
Don't you know that I'm trying to hate you
Trying to have a dream without you in it?
But how can I put out this fire
When you're the one who lit it?
[Chorus]
I can't wait for the day I stop pretending
That I'm really okay when I'm not
I want to know how it feels to be
Over you, for real
Until I do
I'll keep writing songs about you
[Verse 2]
I've got a stack of papers so high
And it's all about you, baby
Keep thinking, "Maybe I
Can make sense of something crazy"
Something I can't get out of my head
I write your name, I write your name
Then, I tear it all to shreds
[Chorus]
I can't wait for the day I stop pretending
That I'm really okay when I'm not
I want to know how it feels to be
Over you, for real
Until I do
I'll keep writing songs about you
[Verse 3]
And if you ever change your mind
And want me back again
I hope these songs will remind me
Why I shouldn't let you in
[Chorus]
I can't wait for the day I stop pretending
That I'm really okay, 'cause I'm not
I want to know how it feels to be
Over you, for real
Until I do
[Chorus]
I'll just wait for the day
I stop pretending
That I'm really okay when I'm not
I want to know how it feels to be
Over you, for real
Till I do
I'll keep writing songs about you
Live Performance[]
The song was the first song Swift ever performed at her famous Bluebird Café gig in Nashville during an open mic night on November 2, 2004. That night she officially “got discovered” and signed a record deal a couple of days later.[7]
